Preparations are on the way to host Dominica's Jazz 'n Creole.
On Thursday February 28, 2013, Discover Dominica Authority hosted a press conference to launch the 4th “Dominica's Jazz 'n Creole”. The event, which showcases local Jazz artists next to regional and international performers, has been well received each year and welcomed over 1,200 patrons in 2012, almost double the attendance of 2011.
To reach an audience beyond the local patronage, in 2013 Discover Dominica Authority will embark on marketing activities to include sales calls and mall exhibitions in the French West Indies and wider Caribbean including Antigua, Barbados, and St. Maarten. Additional marketing activities will include presence during the upcoming West Indies vs. Zimbabwe Test Match and a booth during Jazz in the Square in St. Lucia. DDA is also sponsoring OECS Newslink, which is heard in the OECS territories and Barbados. These marketing efforts will not only promote the Jazz 'n Creole main stage event carded for Pentecost Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Fort Shirley in the Cabrits National Park, but also the Jazz 'n Creole fringe events which will run from Wednesday May 15 to Saturday May 18, 2013.
The Jazz 'n Creole fringe events began in 2012, and present an opportunity for the private sector stakeholders to play an active part in the expanding scope of the festival. Vice President of the Dominica Hotel and Tourism Association (DHTA), Mrs. Maxine Alleyne-Esprit, announced the 2013 fringe partners during Thursday's press conference: Evergreen Hotel – Wednesday May 15, Anchorage Hotel – Thursday May 16, Fort Young Hotel – Friday May 17, and River Stone Bar & Grill – Saturday May 18. Additionally, DHTA's annual HikeFest, has also been designed to complement this year's Jazz 'n Creole fringe and main stage, with community hikes from Sunday May 12 to Saturday May 18.
The week promoted as “Hike & Jazz” gives hikers, both visiting and local, the opportunity to hike in the day and attend the Jazz 'n Creole fringe events in the evening. Hoteliers have been invited to put together accommodation packages for visitors to encompass the HikeFest and Jazz 'n Creole activities which DDA will promote during the various regional marketing activities.
During the press conference, Discover Dominica Authority CEO, Colin Piper, released the name of one artist carded to perform at the festival, Beethova Obas. Beethova Obas, is a Haitian born Jazz Artist, based in France, who performs in CUBAHABRA style (subtle mixture of Cuban flavours, Haitian rhythms and rich Brazilian chords, all through the medium of jazz). The additional artists on the line up will be released over the next couple of weeks.
